If when starting you hear a rapid clicking, that is the starter motor solenoid firing. This would indicate that there is not enough power going to the starter motor from the battery to turn the engine. Even with jump leads, if there are dead cells in the battery you are likely to get the same result.
It is highly likely that the battery has been discharged (gone flat) and/or needs replacing, especially if it over 3-4 years old.
