Engine Timing: Does my timing chain need changing

If the engine in your vehicle has a timing chain and not a belt then unless there is a diagnosed issue with the timing chain, there is no maintenance required of it.

However should you have any rattles, especially on starting, difficulty starting or rough running, this is an indication that something isn't right with the timing chain and its components. The timing chain could be stretched, the guides could be worn or even the cogs it turns could be damaged.

It very difficult to tell for certain what has occurred until the timing chain and components are removed and in the case of stretched chains even then it may not be visibly evident. However, the technicians will assess the issues and sounds and only continue once other possibilities are further ruled out.
