Engine: Chuffing sounds from a diesel engine
If you can hear a regular chuffing sound from a diesel engine, the most likely cause is one or more of the injector seals has failed. This needs to be rectified ASAP as any delay can cause a bigger issue than just replacing it, so much so that it can even cause an engine to be beyond repair.
As the gases escape from around the seal, a black tar substance will creep up the side of the injector and literally glue the injector in place. If this happens to an extent where the injector cannot be removed, not only will the injector need replacing but also other components and even the cylinder head itself.
The phenomenon is known as black death in the trade as it can indeed call the end of an engine in some cases. So do not delay in getting is resolved!
