What is an engine warning light on (EML) diagnostic?
With the vast array of engine management sensors on modern cars all sending information back to the engine control unit, at some point the vehicle's engine warning light is bound to come on. As there are literally thousands of reasons for the warning light to appear, some are trivial and some can indicate more serious problems.
All the technicians on the network have very good diagnostic equipment that can be used to delve deep into the issues to pinpoint the cause of the error.
Please note that a sub £500 error code reader is NOT a diagnostic tool and simply reading an error code can lead to many parts being replaced that were not required, which is why it is often cheaper to pay for professional diagnostics in the long run.
What happens during an engine warning light on (EML) diagnostic?
The mechanic will need to access vehicles electronic control units (ECU) via the OBD port inside the vehicle. Please be aware that on some vehicles these are in covered areas such as under the ashtray, at the back of a storage hole or even in the glove box, so the mechanic will need to remove anything that is blocking access to it.
- The mechanic will go through the diagnostic error code and read live data to pinpoint the cause(s) of the warning light.
- If it is an intermittent fault and therefore not present, they may be able to extinguish the light, clear the error code and it not return
- If the cause of the issue requires additional work and parts, the mechanic will provide you with a quotation and a detailed description of the fault(s)

FAQ’s
Does the price quoted cover the repair?
If the rectification required to turn off the EML can be done within an hour and doesn’t require any parts, then it is covered by the quote.
Any time over an hour and parts are NOT included. The mechanic will give you a no obligation quotation for the work required.
What happens if the mechanic cannot find out the reason for the EML?
Whilst it is unusual for this to happen, it can occur where additional time is required to perform deeper diagnostics in order to find the reason. If this is the case, then the mechanic will discuss what is going to be required with you.
What happens if the same thing occurs again?
If the rectification was a temporary one, the mechanic will have given you a quote for the permanent solution. Therefore, that booking would need to be placed, or another diagnostic booking made.
Can I supply my own parts?
No, we will not fit customer supplied parts unless they are a brand new item, purchased from a dealership with the receipt as proof of purchase. There is no flexibility over this due to insurance and warranty issues.
