What does an indicator stalk do?
The vehicle's direction indicators are controlled by the driver using a steering column mounted indicator stalk. This multifunction part can often be part of the vehicle's headlight control as well, so it’s correct operation is critical. Depending on which way the stalk is moved, it will turn on the left or right indicator bulbs accordingly.
How does an indicator stalk work and what are the components?
At the base of the stalk are various electrical connections and they work in a similar way to a household light switch. Position the stalk in a certain way and the connection to that circuit is made and the system has a connected power circuit, thus illuminating the bulbs on that circuit. As these connections need to be clean and are reliant on the connectivity of the components, any ingress of dirt or wear of them can result in the unit not working.
Typical symptoms that require an indicator stalk to be replaced.
Issues are usually pretty apparent. When the stalk is used, the indicators fail to operate unless the stalk itself is manipulated to make the connections. Sometimes though, they fail to operate at all in either direction no matter what you try to do. This is a very common occurrence on Peugeot and Citroen models especially.
What happens during an indicator stalk replacement?
Changing indicator stalks is a routine repair for all mechanics and can be done both kerbside as well as in the workshop, providing it is safe to do so.
Whilst there are variations between manufacturers, the basics are pretty similar.
The mechanic will;
- Test the indicator stalk for its operation.
- Ensure the electrical system is intact (fuses, wiring, bulbs etc).
- If the indicator stalk is confirmed as the issue, proceed with its replacement.
- Disarm the steering wheel airbag, usually by means of either removing the SRS system fuse or by disconnecting the battery.
- Remove steering wheel airbag followed by the steering wheel itself
- Replace the indicator stalk
- Re-assemble the parts and reconnect the SRS (airbag) system
- Clear any SRS error codes and test the stalk

FAQ’s
Can I supply my own parts?
No, we will not fit customer supplied parts unless they are a brand new item, purchased from a dealership with the receipt as proof of purchase. There is no flexibility over this due to insurance and warranty issues.
What happens if the mechanic finds that the indicator stalk doesn’t require changing and the problem is due to another issue?
In this scenario, the mechanic will provide a no obligation quote for the correct repair. Should you accept this, the mechanic can alter the booking accordingly. If you decide not to go ahead with the alternative repair, the mechanic can change the booking to a call out and diagnostic booking and charge according to the time spent with the vehicle and call out.
