What does a crankshaft pulley do?
The crankshaft pulley in its basic form is a solid cast steel item that does not require any maintenance, nor is likely to require replacing.
A crankshaft damper pulley on the other hand is slightly different as it has a rubber element to it which acts to reduce engine vibration and is therefore also known as a harmonic balancer. Its essential function is reducing the amount of vibrations the crankshaft generates at certain speeds and preventing the resulting stress from breaking the crankshaft.
Both versions provide the driving force, via the auxiliary belt to power the engines ancillary components such as the alternator and power steering pump etc.
How does a crankshaft damper pulley work and what are the components?
The crankshaft consists of two main elements; a metal mass element that reduces the acceleration of the vibrations and a rubber element that absorbs the vibrations.
Typical symptoms that require a crankshaft damper pulley to be replaced.
- When there is an uncommon noise coming from the engine bay.
- When, under accelerating, there is an increasingly louder noise coming from the engine.
- When the engine vibrates more than usual whilst driving.
What happens during a crankshaft damper pulley replacement?
Changing the crankshaft damper pulley is a routine repair for all mechanics and can be done both kerbside as well as in the workshop, providing it is safe to do so.
Whilst there are variations between manufacturers, the basics are pretty similar.
The mechanic will;
- Check the condition of the crankshaft damper pulley.
- If necessary, replace the crankshaft damper pulley.
- Advise if any other parts need to be replaced.
- Test drive the car and check everything works correctly.

FAQ’s
Can I supply my own parts?
No, we will not fit customer supplied parts unless they are a brand new item, purchased from a dealership with the receipt as proof of purchase. There is no flexibility over this due to insurance and warranty issues.
What happens if the mechanic finds that the crankshaft damper pulley doesn’t require changing and the problem is due to another issue?
In this scenario, the mechanic will provide a no obligation quote for the correct repair. Should you accept this, the mechanic can alter the booking accordingly. If you decide not to go ahead with the alternative repair, the mechanic can change the booking to a call out and diagnostic booking and charge according to the time spent with the vehicle and call out.
