What is a cooling system pressure test?
Engine cooling systems are a complex array of channels, pipes and tubes that the coolant circulates through in order to keep the engine temperatures down.
If you have been losing coolant but there is no obvious leak, then a cooling system pressure test is carried out to find the source of the leak.
How does a cooling system pressure test work?
Firstly, the mechanic will need to ensure that the cooling system is topped up to the correct level.
Then the mechanic will put a pressure test kit onto the circuit, usually via the header bottle opening and put the system under pressure using a pump or inflation device depending on the equipment. This will then force the coolant out of the breach in the system and assist with understanding where the leak is coming from.
Quite often the leak cannot be detected any other way as it may only occur when the vehicle is at operating temperature and quite likely on the move too.
Typical symptoms that require a cooling system pressure test.
Most obviously, if you have been topping up the coolant on a regular basis but are unable to see where the leak is, then a cooling system pressure test is the place to start.
What happens during a cooling system pressure test?
There are many different processes required depending on the manufacturer, some of which may include all the following or just some
The mechanic will
* Top up the cooling system if required
* Set the equipment up and pressurise the system
* Then go round the various components, pipes and radiator/heater matrix to physically determine where the leak is coming from.
* If possible, rectify the leak (i.e. if it is just a hose that needs tightening) or create a quote for the repairs required.

FAQ’s
What if there is no leak evident?
If there are no external leaks, it may be an internal engine issue such as the cylinder head gasket. The mechanic will check this out as far as possible and give a verdict on what to do next.
Can I supply my own parts?
No, we will not fit customer supplied parts unless they are a brand new item, purchased from a dealership with the receipt as proof of purchase. There is no flexibility over this due to insurance and warranty issues.
What happens if the mechanic finds that the cooling system doesn’t repair and the problem is due to another issue?
In this scenario, the mechanic will provide a no obligation quote for the correct repair. Should you accept this, the mechanic can alter the booking accordingly. If you decide not to go ahead with the alternative repair, the mechanic can change the booking to a call out and diagnostic booking and charge according to the time spent with the vehicle and call out.
