What Is a Diesel Particulate Filter?
A DPF is a ceramic filter in a diesel car’s exhaust that traps soot (tiny black particles) produced during combustion so they don’t exit the tailpipe. As you drive, the filter gradually fills with soot; the engine management then raises exhaust temperature to burn that soot into ash in a process called regeneration. This can happen naturally on longer, hotter runs (motorway “passive” regen) or be triggered by the car (“active” regen). Sensors before/after the DPF monitor how full it is and when to regenerate.
Over many miles the ash that remains can build up and the filter may need professional cleaning or replacement. A DPF isn’t the same as a catalytic converter (though some units are combined), and it’s usually mounted close to the engine in the exhaust. If a DPF warning light appears, it means the filter needs attention soon, typically a proper drive to complete a regen or a technician’s diagnosis.
How long can you drive with DPF light on?
Short answer is there’s no safe set mileage. A steady amber DPF light is an early warning, we recommend deal with it the same day or as soon as possible.
If the car drives normally and only the DPF light is on, try a regeneration drive: get the engine fully warm, then cruise for 15–30 minutes at a steady road speed (about 40–60 mph) keeping revs around 2,000–2,500 rpm (use a lower gear or “S/manual” mode in an auto). Avoid stop-start traffic, and make sure you’ve got at least over ¼ tank of fuel. If the light goes out, you’ve likely cleared the soot.
If the light stays on, is flashing, you feel loss of power/limp mode, or other warnings appear, don’t keep driving, continuing can clog the filter further and risk very costly damage. Book a DPF diagnosis as soon as possible to avoid further issues.
What is DPF regeneration?
DPF regeneration is the self-cleaning process your diesel uses to burn off the soot trapped in the Diesel Particulate Filter, turning it into a tiny amount of ash so the filter doesn’t clog.
There are three kinds:
- Passive regen: happens naturally on a longer, hotter run (e.g., steady motorway driving) when exhaust heat is high enough to burn soot away.
- Active regen: the car deliberately raises exhaust temperature (by adjusting engine settings and fuel injection) during normal driving when sensors detect the filter is getting full. You just keep driving; it completes in ~10–20 minutes of steady running.
- Forced regen: a workshop procedure using diagnostics to clean a heavily loaded DPF if normal regens can’t complete.
If the DPF light stays on, the car goes into limp mode, or you’ve tried a proper steady run and it won’t clear, book a DPF diagnosis. You may need a forced regeneration and to fix any underlying issues (e.g., sensors, EGR, temperature not reaching target).
What does a blocked dpf sound like
A blocked DPF is mostly “felt” (loss of power, frequent regens, warning light) rather than heard. That said, you might notice some knock-on noises:
- Roaring cooling fans and a hotter smell when the car keeps trying to regenerate.
- A muffled/strained exhaust note as backpressure rises.
- Hiss/“chuff” from the exhaust if a joint or flexi starts leaking under the extra pressure.
What does a DPF delete do?
A DPF delete removes the filter and disables its controls, increasing pollution and making the car unroadworthy for UK use, we would highly recommend fixing the underlying issue instead.
It’s also illegal to use a vehicle that’s been modified so it no longer meets emissions rules you can risk fines up to £1,000 for cars and £2,500 for vans.
Can a mobile mechanic replace or fix the DPF?
Mobile mechanics can usually scan the DPF system, check soot load and live data (differential pressure, temps, regen history), and look for root causes like a stuck thermostat, EGR issues, boost leaks, or failed pressure/temperature sensors. If the filter isn’t too full, they can often perform a forced regeneration at your location and replace accessible sensors/hoses that are tripping the light. If the filter needs to be replaced then in some cases the garage will be better suited for a job like this. If your car is drivable, ClickMechanic offers free collection and delivery for bringing it to the garage.

Frequently asked questions about DPF cleaning, regeneration & replacements
Read our answers to questions about DPF cleaning, regeneration & replacement costs, symptoms and more.
What does the Diesel Particulate Filter light mean?
Your car's internal computer will monitor the level of soot inside the DPF to determine if regeneration is needed. When the level of soot hits a certain threshold, about 45% blocked, then the engine will turn on passive regeneration. If that process is interrupted then the warning light will come on to encourage the driver to do active regeneration.
What does a diesel particulate filter replacement involve?
- The mechanic will check the engine's ECU for Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) related faults.
- Mechanic will inspect the filter.
- If necessary, the Diesel Particulate Filter will be replaced.
- Mechanic will advise if any other parts need to be replaced.
- Mechanic runs engine, tests DPF operation.
- Mechanic will make adjustments where necessary.

What are the symptoms of a faulty dpf?
There are a number of symptoms which could point to a blocked DPF:
- The DPF warning light on the dashboard will come on
- Car goes into ‘safe’ or ‘limp’ mode
- Loss of power
- High fuel consumption
- Starting issues
How long will a DPF replacement take?
On average a DPF replacement will on average take around 1.5 hours, but can take anywhere from 1 hour to over 2 hours. The time that the job takes will depend on a range of factors. Is it safe to drive with the DPF warning light on?
The light first coming on is an advisory to use the active regeneration method. This means driving on a motorway for just half an hour. It should turn the light off and solve the soot issue for several weeks.
The sooty particulates will build up quickly causing more issues with your exhaust system, in some cases you may only have a week. The particulates are also extremely bad for the environment, with some of the particles directly responsible for acid rain. The drop in performance will be noticeable, and costly as you will need more fuel to run your car.
How to extend the lifetime of your DPF?
The best way to keep the diesel particulate filter clean and working is to take your car regularly for a drive on the motorway. Manufacturers developed a method to ‘regenerate’ the DPF by driving continuously on a motorway for 30 minutes. At this speed, the engine temperature is high enough to burn down and loosen any clumps of soot stuck in the DPF. This active regeneration and needs to happen every few months, especially if you are driving in an urban environment, where soot builds up more quickly.
Can a DPF be cleaned?
Yes, if a DPF has become too clogged for a forced regeneration or the Mass Ash Volume has been exceeded, then a physical cleaning of the DPF will be required.
How much does DPF regeneration cost?
A DPF regeneration costs on average £90. Pricing will vary depending on your car and location. For an instant price and to find out what you could save by getting a DPF regen through ClickMechanic, select your car at the top of this page!
How much does it cost to have a DPF filter cleaned?

Can I still drive with a blocked dpf?
Driving with a blocked DPF is not advisable as it can lead to lead further complications on your vehicle. The build up of soot can reach a point whereby the car has to enter 'limp-mode', this to help prevent damage to the engine. If you suspect there is any issue with your dpf or there are concerns about its age or condition, book an inspection with a professional mechanic immediate effect.
How often should DPF be cleaned?
The Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) is part of the emissions control system on most Diesel cars and controls soot from passing into the atmosphere, making your Diesel more eco-friendly. As you drive the DPF stacks up with soot which it needs to burn off in order to ‘regenerate’, which effectively cleans the system. It is when the regeneration criteria are not met, for example when using your vehicle mainly for shorter journeys, and the DPF will become too full and get blocked that a physical clean and forced regeneration may be needed.
Is a blocked dpf an MOT failure?
Yes, the presence and functioning of a diesel particulate filter is checked as part of the exhaust system check during an MOT test. A vehicle with a missing DPF filter will result in an automatic MOT failure.
How often should I replace a dpf?
Typically, the DPF filter lasts between 80,000 - 100,000 or even more on a well maintained car. However, if the filter is found to be blocked or faulty, it will need to be replaced to keep up with the emissions standards in the UK.
How much does a DPF filter replacement cost?
On average prices for a DPF filter replacement start from £160 to over £500, with an average cost of £300. Ultimately, the costs for a DPF replacement depends on your car and what parts your car's manufacturer recommends using for the replacement.
