Frequently asked questions about Lexus indicator light switch replacement & repairs

Read our answers to questions about indicator light switch replacement costs, symptoms and more.

How do you know something is wrong with the indicator stalk on your Lexus?

Issues are usually pretty apparent. When the stalk is used, the indicators fail to operate unless the stalk itself is manipulated to make the connections. Sometimes though, they fail to operate at all in either direction no matter what you try to do. This is a very common occurrence on Peugeot and Citroen models especially.

When should you replace the Lexus indicator stalk?

As direction indicators are paramount to road safety, their correct operation is required by law. Therefore as soon as an issue arises, it needs to be rectified with immediate action.

How common is an indicator stalk replacement on my Lexus?

Most vehicles will go through their life without ever needing a replacement, however, as mentioned earlier, some models in the PSA group are susceptible to problematic stalks.

How can I extend the life of my Lexus indicator stalk?

There is little that can be done to prevent issues from occurring, however heavy handed operation will of course lead to issues.

What happens during an indicator stalk replacement on my Lexus?

Because the indicator stalks are usually steering column mounted, they are secured in place behind the steering wheel, which will require its removal. As the steering wheel will contain an airbag, this will need disarming prior to any replacement work.

  • The mechanic will test the indicator stalk for its operation.
  • Mechanic will ensure the electrical system is intact (fuses, wiring, bulbs etc).
  • If the indicator stalk is confirmed as the issue, the mechanic will proceed with its replacement.
  • Mechanic will disarm the steering wheel airbag, usually by means of either removing the SRS system fuse or by disconnecting the battery.
  • The steering wheel airbag will be removed followed by the steering wheel itself
  • The indicator stalk is replaced
  • Mechanic will then re-assemble the parts and reconnect the SRS (airbag) system
  • Mechanic will clear any SRS error codes and test the stalk

How much does an indicator stalk replacement on Lexus cost?

The cost of replacing an indicator light stalk depends on your car and what parts your car's manufacturer recommends using for the replacement. Find out what you could save by having the indicator stalk replaced by ClickMechanic, by selecting your car at the top of this page!
