Frequently asked questions about coil spring replacement & repairs in Oxfordshire
Read our answers to questions about coil spring replacement costs, symptoms and more.
What does a coil spring replacement in Oxfordshire involve?
Whilst there are difference between vehicles, there are some basic processes across most;
- The mechanic will raise the vehicle and inspect the suspension system and coil springs in detail.
- If necessary, the mechanic will replace the front or rear pair of coil springs.
- The mechanic will advise if other components need to be replaced.
- The mechanic will check the suspension again and test drive the car.
What are the symptoms of a faulty coil spring?
Usually, you can notice something is amiss with a coil spring as some of the conditions are quite noticeable such as;
- The vehicle is noticeably lower on one side
- There is uneven steering, or even veering off to one side
- There are rattles and knocks when going over uneven road surfaces.
However, there are occasions where a coil spring has broken right at the bottom and it’s therefore not always that obvious. It has also been known for the coil springs on both sides to break within a short time of each other, especially if the vehicle has been parked up for some time, so the obvious leaning to one side isn’t quite so evident.
How long does it take to replace coil springs?
A front coil springs replacement on average takes around 2 hour, but can take anywhere from just over 1 hour to 3 hours. A rear coil springs replacement takes on average 1 hour, but can take up to around 1.5 hours. Ultimately, the time that the job will take will depend on a number of factors, like your vehicle's make and model, year, as well as other factors. Select your car at the top of this page for information on job time and cost for your vehicle through ClickMechanic.
Is a broken coil spring an MOT failure?
Yes, a broken coil spring is an MOT failure. Coil springs are safety-critical to the car and hence are checked during an MOT. If the coil spring is broken on the car it is very likely the vehicle won't be able to move in the first place, or will only move with difficulty. It is highly recommended that the car should not be driven as it poses a safety risk on the road and can cause further damage to your vehicle. Make sure to get a professional mechanic check the issue, and get it resolved before taking the vehicle for an MOT.
Is coil spring checked during an MOT test?
Yes, coil springs are thoroughly checked by the MOT inspector as it is critical for the overall safety of the vehicle. The MOT tester will examine to see if the coil springs are free from any damage or corrosion, correctly mounted and free from cracks and fractures.
When should I replace coil springs?
Coil springs can last anywhere from 50,000 miles to the entire lifetime of the vehicle, however, this number can vary depending on driving habits and external factors such as climate and road conditions. It is important that coil springs are replaced immediately if found to be corroded or damaged.
Can Oxfordshire garages offer home collection and delivery for coil spring replacement?
Yes, many garages in Oxfordshire are able to offer collection and delivery for a coil spring replacement. With ClickMechanic collection & delivery is free if your vehicle is drivable. Was initially a little concerned when they rang to say more work would need to be done as I'm a young female and am always concerned about garages trying it on. When I mentioned checking the suggested extra work over, they were supportive about that and provided a very thorough video of the problems so that both I and my family who live at the other side of the country could review it. During the initial call he provided a very rough estimate of the costs for parts and was up front about needing to check before finalising a price. My boyfriend's comments upon seeing the video was "Oh God I didn't realise it was as bad as that, yeah you absolutely need to get all that done" and to be totally fair a couple of things had been noted on my service as things to keep an eye on but I thought weren't quite as problematic. When he called back with a quote for the extra parts and labour, it was an exceptionally fair price and was at the lower end of what I'd seen estimated and well within what my dad said I could reasonably expect to pay.
When they dropped off my car they had a really helpful chat about what work they'd done and how to drive better to get things like my clutch to last longer. They also explained the likely cause of why my shock absorber had ultimately gone, and gave me a suitable caution about braking whilst my new discs broke in.
I'm really glad to have found such a good garage and will be returning!”
