How does a brake drum work?

Brake drums are found on some vehicles, usually at the rear wheels, especially in smaller or lower-specs models. These big round metal containers spin along with the wheels when the car is moving.

When you press the brake pedal, it activates a system inside your car. This system uses brake fluid to push pistons inside the wheel cylinder. The pistons then push the brake shoes outwards, causing them to press against the inside of the spinning brake drum. This pressing action creates friction, slowing down the wheels and stopping the car.

Brake drums are designed to work in a similar way to brake discs, which are often found on the front wheels. The main difference is in the way they’re built and how they apply the braking force. Brake drums are often used for the rear brakes because they are effective enough for slowing down the vehicle, especially in smaller cars.

Although not as common in newer vehicles, brake drums are still a reliable and trusted part of many braking systems, particularly in compact or budget-friendly cars.

What does a brake drum replacement job involve?

Typically, when replacing the brake drum:

  • First, the mechanic ensures the car is parked safely on a level surface with the engine turned off and the parking brake engaged.
  • Next, they remove the wheels to access the brake drum. Once the brake drum is removed, the mechanic will carefully inspect the brake shoes, wheel cylinder, and the parts that help operate the braking system.
  • The mechanic will check if the brake drum's thickness is still within the acceptable limits. If the drum is too worn, they’ll replace it with a new one.
  • In most cases, the mechanic will also replace the brake shoes with a new set, as they work together with the brake drum to slow the car down.
  • The mechanic may also recommend replacing other parts of the braking system, depending on their condition. This could include things like the wheel cylinder or springs if they’re worn out or damaged.
  • Once everything is replaced or repaired, the mechanic will reassemble the braking system and test drive the car to make sure the brakes are working properly. They’ll check for any unusual noises or issues with braking performance.
  • Finally, the mechanic will make any necessary adjustments to ensure the braking system is functioning smoothly, ensuring that you have reliable stopping power on the road.

How do I know whether I need a brake drum repair or replacement?

If you notice any of the following signs while driving, it might be time to have your brake drums checked or replaced:

  • Unusual noises when braking: If you hear squealing, grinding, or other strange sounds when applying the brakes, it could indicate that the brake drum is damaged or worn out.

  • The car pulls to one side when braking: A car that pulls to one side when you press the brake pedal could mean the brake drum is unevenly worn or the brake system isn’t working properly.

  • Poor braking performance: If the car is taking longer to stop or doesn’t feel as responsive when braking, the brake drum could be compromised and may need replacing.

  • Brake pedal vibrating: If the brake pedal vibrates when you apply pressure, it could be a sign of an issue with the brake drum, such as uneven wear or warping.

  • Visual damage like cracks or scoring: If you notice visible damage like cracks, grooves, or scoring on the brake drum, it’s a clear sign that it needs to be replaced.

  • Uneven wear: If the brake shoes or pads have worn unevenly, it could indicate that the brake drum is not functioning correctly, which may require replacement.

  • Excessive corrosion: Rust or corrosion on the brake drum can weaken its ability to function properly and may require a replacement.

Can a brake drum be repaired?

If the drum is not severely damaged, it is possible to repair such as "resurfacing" techniques. If there is damage to the drum, replacement is always recommended and the safest option.

Can I replace the brake drums myself?

While some might consider tackling a brake drum replacement on their own, we highly recommend that you have this service performed by a professional mechanic. Replacing a brake drum involves handling heavy components and using specialised tools to ensure the part is correctly aligned and securely installed. Improper installation can lead to safety risks and reduced braking performance.

By choosing a qualified mechanic for your brake drum replacement, you’ll enjoy peace of mind knowing that your vehicle is being serviced with precision and care, keeping you and your loved ones safe on the road.

How much does a brake drum replacement cost?

On average, you can expect the cost of replacing a brake drum to be around the range of £220 depending on your vehicle model and the specific parts. Find out what you could save by entering your car reg and postcode on the price estimator tool.

Can the brake drum be replaced by a mobile mechanic?

Yes, in many cases, a brake drum can be replaced by a mobile mechanic, especially for common vehicles. However, depending on the complexity of the repair or if specialised equipment is needed, it might be more suitable to have the job done at a garage. A mobile mechanic will assess the situation and let you know if it can be done on-site or if it needs to be taken to a workshop for more extensive work.

Frequently asked questions about brake drum replacement, repair & inspections

Read our answers to questions about brake drum replacement costs, symptoms and more.

What are brake drums?

Brake drums are often used on the rear of smaller and lower specification vehicles instead of brake discs. The drums rotate with the wheels and provide the surface for the brake shoes to act against when the brake pedal is pressed.

How do brake drums work and what are the components?

When the foot brakes are applied, the hydraulic fluid forces the wheel cylinder pistons out, which in turn forces the brake shoes to come into contact with the inside of the brake drum. This friction then slows the rotational speed of the drum and therefore slows the wheels.

How do you know there is something wrong with the brake drums?

Due to the wear areas being inside the drum and therefore invisible, it is difficult to ascertain whether there is an issue or not. Therefore we recommend having an inspection carried out by a mechanic if you have any concerns.

When should you consider changing the brake drums?

In reality, only when advised to do so by a mechanic after an inspection or during a brake shoe replacement.

Brake drums are supplied and fitted in axle pairs (i.e. rear). It is equally important to have new brake shoes fitted at the same time otherwise any wear pattern on the shoes from the previous drums could severely reduce the contact area between the two. This is so important that no mechanic would consider doing otherwise.

How common are brake drum replacements?

Brake drums do not tend to be replaced as frequently as brake discs. In some cases, brake drums can last the lifetime of a vehicle! However, if the brake shoes become excessively worn, damage can occur to the brake pad application surface, in which case the drum would need to be replaced.

How can I extend the lifetime of my brake drums?

As with most parts of your car, the less pressure you put on any part of your car’s brakes, the longer they will last. If you carry heavy loads frequently, or tow a caravan for example, your brake system will come under greater pressure than it would otherwise and as such the discs may wear prematurely. Therefore, removing unnecessary weight from the vehicle will not only improve your fuel consumption, it will reduce the wear on the brakes.

Also consider your driving style. Anticipating the road conditions ahead, keeping your speed as constant as possible, and thereby avoiding sharp braking are all likely to lengthen the interval between brake drum replacements.

What happens when brake drums are replaced?

  • Mechanic will remove the brake drum and inspect the brake shoes, wheel cylinder and actuating mechanism.
  • Mechanic will establish if the brake drum's thickness is within the required tolerances.
  • If necessary, the mechanic will replace the brake drum along with a new set of brake shoes.
  • Mechanic will advise if other parts of the braking system need replacing too.
  • Mechanic will test drive the car and inspect the brake system again.
  • Mechanic will make adjustments if necessary.

How much do brake drums cost to replace?

The cost of a brake drum replacement depends on your car and what parts your car's manufacturer recommends using for the replacement. Find out what you could save by having your brake drum replaced by ClickMechanic, by selecting your car at the top of this page!
